The Reality of ISBNs

When people start cataloging books, they usually assume an ISBN uniquely identifies a specific book. In reality, the International Standard Book Number is much messier.

ISBN-10: 0-679-74558-0 → ISBN-13: 978-0-679-74558-7

In 2007, the book industry shifted to 13-digit EAN barcodes with the 978 bookland prefix. When searching APIs, checking both representations often resolves missing records.
